Albert Goodwill Spalding (1850-1915) was an American professional baseball player and manufacturer of sporting goods. Albert G. Spalding's ties to what he saw as a special American sport began early on the sandlot in Rockford, Illinois. One of the first professional baseball players and later a manager and club owner, he branched out to become a leading manufacturer of sporting goods. America's National Game, published a few years before his death in 1915, lays out the beginnings of baseball and its advancement while dispensing Spalding's vivid reminiscences and firm opinions. The essential nature of the game, he thought, was warfare. And the opponents took many forms: among them the evil syndicates trying to control the sport, and more inwardly and importantly, the temptations familiar to every young man. Baseball has a lasting debt to Spalding. He was born in Byron, Illinois. From 1871 to 1875 he was the star pitcher for the Boston team of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, the first major league. Spalding joined the Chicago team of the National League as a pitcher, captain and manager in 1876, the first year of the existence of the league. He won 46 games and lost 12 that year. He retired in 1877 and subsequently served as secretary (1878-81) and president (1882-91) of the Chicago team. During this period he established the firm of A. G. Spalding & Bros., manufacturers and distributors of sporting goods. Spalding was a major force in making baseball a national sport. He was instrumental in founding the National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs.Spalding was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. CDROM is a must-have for anyone interested in Baseball and the history of the game. Anyone interested in Baseball or Baseball coaching will enjoy this CDROM. Great gift.
