This is a popular and scientific manual, describing and depicting the moths of the United States and Canada. The author was a chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh and Director Emeritus of the Carnegie Museum. He was a personal friend of W.H. Edwards and S.H. Scudder, two of the leading North American lepidopterists of the time and who assisted with this book. MOTHs are flying INSECTs that with the Butterflies comprise the order Lepidoptera. Moths are among the most delightful of creatures with their myriad colors and forms. Moths are more common than butterflies; in fact almost 95 % of all the lepidoptera are moths. The subdivision is based on differences in lifestyle between butterflies and moths. The most obvious difference is that butterflies are active during the daytime and moths during the night-time. Moths have two pairs of wings that function as a single pair and are covered with dustlike scales. Wingspreads range from 1/6 in. (2 mm) to 10 in. (25 cm). Many moths have PROTECTIVE COLORATION matching their background. They are distinguished from butterflies by their stouter, usually hairy bodies and feathery antennae. Most moths are nocturnal and rest with wings outspread; butterflies usually fly by day and rest with wings upraised. Moths have distinctive feathery antennae. Moths undergo a complete METAMORPHOSIS, feeding on leaves or other plant material. There are over 10,500 identified species of moths in North America (north of Mexico). Surprisingly, there exist only a few books that provide photographs of these beautiful creatures, and these are hard to find. This CDROM of the classic book on Moths has many fabulous color pictures of Moths and will be treasured by yourself or anyone you give it to as a gift. Buy now and enjoy.
