This is a set of two CDROMs containing a complete copy of the pages and HighRes images of color figures of the rare classic amazing book "GRAMMAR OF ORNAMENT" by Owen Jones. This famous book was first published in 1856; CDROM is from a 1910 edition.
The Grammar is one of the most sought after and influential works on ornamental design ever published. Hailed as the "Masterpiece of all Chromolithographic books", it was produced on 600 hand-etched stone plates, and took 5 people over a year to complete. More than a dozen colors were carefully registered in some of these chromolithograph illustrations. The book and the CDROM contains over 2,300 beautiful , detailed, and very colorful authenic patterns from cultures and epochs throughout history, including Oceania, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Pompeii, Rome, Arabia, the Moorish, Burmese, Persia, India, Hindu, China, the Celts, Medieval Europe, the Renaissance, Elizabethan, Italian, and Nature. Many of its fabulous designs were taken from ancient monuments that are no longer extant. It had an important effect on the Arts and Crafts movement and on the artistry and designs of William Morris, Louis Sullivan, and Frank Lloyd Wright. The Grammar of Ornament is one of the defining works in decorative arts, the masterwork of Welsh architect and interior designer Owen Jones (1808-74), whose grand tour of Turkey, Egypt, Sicily, and Spain in 1831 marked the beginning of his fascination with illustrations of ornament. His aim was not to produce general artistic views, but to provide scientific accuracy in reproducing his exact and detailed records of colors and patterns. No printer in London at the time could meet Jones' requirements, and eventually he set up his own press to produce the 110 magnificent chromolithographs reproduced here.
